Sicily we hadn't really thought of, but since friends returning had raved about it, we thought why not, it had a lot to offer, so after some research it became very appealing and some lovely places to visit, however we only had eleven nights and was this enough? We begin our journey in Ortigia, where it was a bit of a culture shock coming from Austria, where narrow lanes, fresh markets and a fascinating underground world reveal the island’s layered history and a wonderful place to visit.

We end our holidays in Palermo, a chaotic, colourful and yet unforgettable city filled with markets, noise, culture — and even octopus beaks. A day at Mondello beach made up for it.
